I usually don’t do hot off the presses stuff, but I know yall love all that 90’s alternative and hold out a lot of hope for these guys who more or less introduced us to all the good stuff we enjoy today. But this just happened, and it’s a pretty devastating blow:
“The SMASHING PUMPKINS’ guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998). Corgan will continue to write and record as SMASHING PUMPKINS with plans to head into the studio this spring.”
Zeitgeist, their last record, wasn’t the most thrilling record ever written, but it had a few decent cuts and was a comfort to those who didn’t want to see another FutureEmbrace Ever. Again. I also know a few people who held out hope that the original lineup would eventually get back together – and this really knocks that idea back. This is more disturbing because Jimmy Chamberlin is Billy’s boy – they’re pretty much attached at the hip. I guess it’s possible that Corgan is going into new depths of awesome that average everyday people who’ve only known him for decades are too afraid to follow, but it’s just a touch more likely that we’re going to experience the aural equivalent of Billy C dropping a deuce on our chests with those Eric Cartman vocals we’ve all come to love – and that would be bad for everybody.
Cross your fingers. Here’s the Tarantula video. New media is cool.
