The only time MTV got it wrong in guessing what the public would get crazy about -
Wait, rephrase.
The only time MTV couldn’t sell a trend to the American public before Napster came out and ruined everything for them was the electronica “craze” in the late 90’s. Chemical Brothers and Prodigy and Basement Jazz got a lot of airplay and groups like Bush and Smashing Pumpkins decided they needed to go all electronic-y to remain relevant. And I’m starting to feel like it’s 1998 all over again – as more or less organic groups start throwing in a lot more synthetic material into their new work.
I’ve got a feeling that if Savior, the lead single, is any indicator, The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion is going to turn off a lot of people who liked El Cielo and Catch Without Arms. Even though the opening lyrics for this one are cringeworthy, I’m willing to stick with these guys and see what pans out.
Amor Vincit Omnia is already out and Pure Reason Revolution is already touring mainland Europe (you can check them out on MySpace here to get those dates. AVO is certainly louder than The Dark Third, and the loud guitars and electronic ambience have kind of overriden the really great melodies on their previous album. I’m kinda hoping that they’ll bring back more catchiness (and more Chloe) for the next go-round, but both records are top flight and worth paying for.
