Mission
The advent of the internet has been like The Singularity in the way we relate to music. The entire Frank Zappa catalog is available on a disk the size of a cornchip – but while our access to music has changed, the way we treat it and relate to it has too – and maybe not for the better. In an era where music doesn’t have as much value materially, entire industries are grinding to a halt trying to adjust to it, and the deluge of tunes has made it seem disposable in the minds of some, this raised a question : how can we get back to the anxiety and shrinkwrap biting we all used to have when music was really, really expensive?
That, in a nutshell, is the realm Stereo Zeitgeist operates in. Trying to capture the cultural current, the spirit of the times in music. Examining the way we think about something is probably more ambitious than chronicling it, but there you go. We do current events and interviews and music reviews, but the site isn’t really about those things – there are other places that do that stuff better than us. We like talking about music, but we’re not in love with Pitchfork/Rolling Stones style “music journalism”, where everything is a re-imagining of something else. The music exists. Let it. We hope, though, that we can use the medium of storytelling to increase appreciation for music in the post-ringtone world.
Staff
Stereo Zeitgeist is based in New Jersey, Georgia, Ohio, and the Netherlands. While there’s 4 people who could claim ownership of the site, Frozen Atlantic and bone machine do most of the day to day operations. Generally, we love 90’s style alternative and progressive rock, but really between the two of us, anything can strike our interest. This is Version One of the Stereo Zeitgeist layout. As we make contacts in the blogosphere and attract new people, the layout and content very well may shift some. I mean, hell, the 2 column thing is already a little crowded…
Outreach
If you’re a band looking for coverage, you’ve got a demo, etc, whatever – MySpace or a private message through our forum is probably the best way to go to get in touch quickly. While we cover music, we’re not a music review site – we like stories.
We’re ALWAYS looking to expand our grip over the music loving community. If you’re a blog owner, we’re always interested in link exchanges or having our forum “adopted” to make traffic stick to your site. We’ve got a domain name and a bunch of webspace and bandwidth we don’t use and a licensed IPB and a whole bunch of other bells and whistles. We’ve been around a while, we’re fairly stable – stuff that goes up here stays here.
We’re like newborn babies. Very malleable. Very open to ideas.
Send stuff to god@stereozeitgeist.com.
And thank you for reading.
